With a background in sign writing and graffiti, Ian McCallum’s work is heavily influenced by typographic styles and painting processes. His arts practice attempts to communicate directly through traditional lettering and indirectly with gestural colour and abstraction.
McCallum’s paintings are a playful combination between clean design and letter structure, mixed with messy textural forms found through a daily process of creating. Freeform intuitive painting, together with considered placement, McCallum is aiming to create a push and pull between the chaos and the calm. Found elements, colour combinations and grit are reworked, distorted and magnified to draw attention to easily missed details and appealing accidents in our daily routine.
